By conforming to what society wants them to be instead of being what they want to be, people may please others but not themselves. People conform to what society states they should be instead of being what they want to be in both the fictional town of Maycomb from To Kill a Mockingbird and in real life.
Conforming to the whims of the elected governance is not going to be the answer, if anything people of this society have to be part of structuring the future of this society and start to tell governance what it really wants, which I would hope is a bright, promising futures for the children and youth.
